Introducing Mt. Seorak

The port city of Mt. Seorak is located in the southwest corner of the Korean peninsula. The name "Mt. Seorak" is first found in the History of Kyoro. In 1439, over 20 years after King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty came to power, the Mt. Seorak man-ho was constructed, and the first port was established on October 1st, 1897. Upon Korea's annexation by Japan in 1910, the city was given a new name, "Mt. Seorak-bu" and received its current name, "Mt. Seorak City", the year after the nation's independence from Japan. On October 1st, 1997, when Mt. Seorak had its centennial as a port city, the city announced the second opening of the port. Mt. Seorak has become famous as the hometown of President Kim Dae-jung, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.

Attractions

The Seoraksan National Park – It is a natural work or art. It is the most beautiful portion of Baekdudaegan, a great mountain range. Mt. Seoraksan is adorned with wild flowers in spring, thick and green foliage in summer, autumn maple tints in fall, and dazzling snow in winter. Once you're in you can't help but fall in love with its charms.

The Gwongeum Castle – A cable car ride arranged to the Gwongeum Castle provides an excellent view of the valleys which seems to make an impression of their own gorgeousness to you.

The Sinheungsa Temple – The Sinheungsa was the subordinate temple Geonbongsa. However, in 197, it was named the main Temple of the 3rd district of the Korea Buddhist Jogye order. Currently, there are 20 subordinate temples under Sinheungsa.

The Goseong Unification Observatory – As the observatory located closest to North Korea, more than one million people visit this area on an annual basis. Visitors can see the world famous Mt. Geumgangsan and Heageumgang, meaning Mt. Geumgangsan of the sea, with the naked eye. The road to the observatory brings forth a sense of tension due to the barbed-wire entanglements along the coast, the soldiers working on alert and the checkpoint. The DMZ is the only symbol of a divided nation in the world; Gangwon-do is the only divided province.
