South Korea, often referred to as the "Land of the Morning Calm," has a population of 48.50 million (2006) and a total land area of 99,678 Sq Km(2006). Located at a major crossroads of Northeast Asia, it has also achieved the "Miracle of the Han River." Since 1945, as a by-product of the Cold War, the peninsula has been divided at the 38th parallel. The republic of Korea, or South Korea, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, more commonly known as North Korea, are separated by a demilitarised zone.
