Attractions
The Bund - A section of riverfront along the Huangpu River in Shanghai, until the early 1800s, it was undeveloped. In the early 1900s, the Bund sprouted up with buildings designed by architects from Britain, France, China, America, Russia, Japan, and others from various countries. The Bund is a record of architecture of the times from around the world, and many of its buildings were the best in Asia for their time.
The Yu Garden - A place of peace and comfort in the heart of dynamic Shanghai, it dates back to the legendary Ming Dynasty of China. Today Yu Garden occupies an area of five acres and is built in a style associated with the renowned Suzhou gardens, which are characterised by an exquisite layout, beautiful scenery and artistic architecture. Each pavilion, hall, stone and stream in the garden expresses the essence of South China's landscape design from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The Jade Buddha Temple - One of the best-preserved temples in China, it contains two Burmese jade Buddha statues for which it was built in 1882. An active temple, you are able to view the monks during their ceremonies throughout the day. The main hall contains three magnificent Buddha of gold as well as figures of Buddhist disciples lining the walls.
The Longhua Pagoda and Longhua Temple - Situated in the southwest part of the city, it is a major attraction in Shanghai. Though its popularity spread only after 1900s, this biggest and oldest temple in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Delta is very familiar indeed. Legend has it that it was the first built in 242 when the Emperor had it built to show filial piety to his mother.
The Chenghuang Temple - In the area known as ‘‘Old Street’’, it refers an old block that has more than 100 temples, restaurants, and shops. This area contains narrow laneways and small squares in an ‘old China’ style.
The Grand View Garden - Located at the lakeside Dianshan in Shanghai, it is a complex in typical architectural style of the Qing Dynasty. Exquisitely constructed pavilions, towers, caves, rocks scenes and pavements scattered throughout the garden, which was modelled from the scenes described in "The Red Chamber Dream", one of the greatest Chinese novels. Because the landscapes in the garden and the stories depicted in the book shine mutually, the Grand View Garden quickly become an attractive scenic spot in Shanghai area in recent years.
The Qibao Ancient Town - Located about 10 miles from downtown Shanghai, it is a spiritual sanctuary, free from the traffic jams, pollution, and noise that now plague most modern cities. Built around one thousand years ago, this town witnessed great development in the Song Dynasty and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The Shanghai Museum - Located at the south of People's Square, It owns a collection of 120,000 precious artworks, including ancient Chinese bronze, ceramics, painting and calligraphy. It is a must if you like to see the precious history and artefacts of China.
The Shanghai Acrobat Show - No wonder near capacity crowds are drawn nightly to see the Shanghai Acrobatics Troupe. Circus acrobatics has been around in China for 2000 years and today's troupes are reputed to be the best in the world. There are full of suspense and excitement.
The Formula 1 Grand Prix Shanghai - Once a year, for all those you that enjoy fast cars and glamorous parties, the Shanghai Circuit is a short distance from Shanghai downtown.
