Introducing Guilin
Guilin was founded since the Qin dynasty and developed as a hub of transportation. It is one of the best-known tourist destinations in China and famous for its wonderful nature scenery including rivers and karst peaks that covered in lush greenery. Due to her astonishing beauty, you might find Guilin has always been appearing in the themes of thousands of Chinese painting. In ancient China, the China’s First Emperor praised its beauty as ‘‘the most marvellous mountains and rivers under heaven’’. As a result, countless Chinese artists, poets and tourists have been visiting this miraculous city to witness whether what the First Emperor said is true. However, not a single one may deny this beautiful fact. Apart from the legend, there are also many scenic places that you can explore further and surprise yourself with Guilin’s inborn gorgeousness. These include Longsheng with its famous Longji rice terraces. The Li River for instance, a scene of which is printed on the back of Chinese Renminbi ¥20 bank notes as well as Yangshuo, a small city downstream from Guilin. All of these make Guilin a wonderful base for discovering the northern end of Guangxi Province.
Attractions
The Li River Cruise - The long and winding Li River, meandering on its way from Guilin to Yangshuo, has been the inspirations for countless poems, paintings and songs. Poets were praising its beauty 1,000 years ago. It is the main attraction in the area around Guilin and, along with visiting the region's many ethnic minorities, is the primary reason you would spend your time and come to visit Guangxi Province.
The Elephant Trunk Hill - Jutting out into the Li River at its junction with Peach Blossom River, it is a symbol of Guilin. It looks like a giant elephant drinking water with its trunk on the Li River bank and extremely lively at dusk. There is a cave called "Moon-over-Water Cave" between the trunk and legs, which looks like a full moon floating on the surface of the water. On the top of the hill, there is a Ming Dynasty pagoda. Naturally you may see it is a hilt of a dagger on the back of the elephant, which reminds you the legend of the hill’s formation told by our tour guide.
The Reed Flute Cave - Situated at Guangming Hill in the north-western suburb of the Guilin. With its many stalactites, stalagmites, and unusual rock formations, Reed Flute Cave is definitely a must-see attraction of Guilin. This large underground complex of grottos, unique rock and stone formations, and colourful lighting contains some of the most extraordinary scenery offered by the city. The Crystal Palace of the Dragon King and the Old Scholar stone are just some of the famous attractions contained within the caves.
The Fubo Hill - Standing above the ground, it slopes into the Li River in the east and looms in the west. It is called Fubo hill because waves and ripples run back wherever they meet the peak, which descends into the river, blocking the water. In addition, there is a tale that one called General Fubo had once passed by Guilin on a southern expedition in the Han Dynasty. He poured all the pearls he carried into the river, so the hill was named after him in his memory, and there used to be a Fubo Pavilion on the hill in the Tang Dynasty.
The Longsheng and Longji Village - Near Guilin, it is famous for the excessively large number of terraced rice paddy fields on its mountain, which has created an intricate pattern on the hill side. Longji means 'Dragon Backed Mountain'. When the paddies are full of water in spring, it is said to resemble the scales on the back of a dragon. The fields are gorgeous all year round as the rice grows and matures, changing colours as it does so.
Yangshuo - A town in Guilin settled amongst the most beautiful part of the Li River's karst scenery. This area of gorgeous limestone mountains and natural beauty is a relaxing place and has become popular with international travellers. Yangshuo is also China's foremost venue for rock climbing.
